AM I A BONAFIDE SYMBIAN?

I walked in lugging my baggage with a drooping head in a perplexed mindset of hostel life and its nuances. As my eyes glanced through the hostel list I had a lump in my throat only to digest the fact that I was in a three seater room with two roomies from Delhi. My heart sank with commotion as to how would life be for a small town girl in a prestigious educational institute like this.
As I woke up to my alarm on Monday morning the first thing which came to my mind is the pangs of hunger that got me out of my cosy bed on a cold morning. As I was having breakfast in an isolated mess I caught sight of my friend, Priyanka walking in to grab some food. We exchanged cunning witty smiles. My mind wandered back to Sunday night when she went partying with her friends and walked back into her room in a sloshed state only to create’ ruckus’, turning it into a discotheque along with her friends until she dropped dead! Not a sense of shame or embarrassment was seen on her face for her actions on the previous night. This amazed me and suddenly the sense of time brought me back to reality and urged me to rush to class.
As I was sitting through the lectures I noticed my partner, Sudeshna dozing off just unable to keep her heavy eyelids open. T o avoid the lecturer getting annoyed I slowly nudged her. As I continued listening to the lecture I ruminated if she could ever catch up with 7-8 hrs of sleep required for human beings to function actively which she selflessly sacrificed on facebooking till 4 am in the morning. The lecturer gave an assignment and left the class as I noticed the enthusiasm on Sudeshna’s face to catch up with the first meal of the day further providing a cutting edge to hibernate in the afternoon lectures. There was a sense of excitement as I shook her up from a slumberous state (class) in the evening to chit chat over a cup of coffee.
As I walked down the stairs for the Events Club meeting I contemplated if I would finish my assignment before dinner. The sight of my classmates playing basketball, going for movies, shopping ,’chandana’(bar) and gossiping cogitated me if I ever had the time for all this on a weekday .I rather thought they were intelligent people who worked smartly. Later in the evening, I asked my roomies if they were going downstairs with me for dinner. The guilt pangs of having paid the mess fees drove them to the mess only to realise that shelling some extra bucks on Dominos Pizza was worth the binge!
With the temperature dipping and the wind blowing through my window brushing my skin I felt nostalgic and decided to take a break from work and went for a walk. While returning from the walk I spotted my friends enjoying cigarettes and warming themselves up. Walking towards them in a condescending manner I boldly ask them ‘’have you guys finished your reporting assignments?’’Suddenly I noticed grimace and thunder struck expression on their faces accompanied with the comment ’’what the f**k?’’ in unison. They would rather watch a porn movie than discipline their thoughts to write out an assignment.
Early dinner can be beneficial to foodies as they avail an opportunity to snack on something in the midnight. As I walked up to the general store on campus I could hear cacophony getting me to sense an environment of fight among the students only to understand that it was the birthday bumps that the poor boy was experiencing along with the cake smudged on his face as a mark of remembrance. The next thing that caught my eyes as I waited for the crowd to clear out at the store were my friends with their laptops and register in place munching on lays on the cafeteria window side near the foosball table pondering the priority of the assignment over a game.
As I walked back to my room I saw a couple cuddling up and making love which seemed scurrilous and scandalous to me. With a plethora of unorganised thoughts in mind I realised that I was still a spectator who was dumb struck at the sight of students life style in this place clueless if I wanted to join the bandwagon or not. Now I envisaged if I would ever be a true symbian?

SORRY MAA!

Recently i happened to watch the movie Thanks Maa... its indeed is a fantabulous movie! It acts as a tool to communicate the message to today's generation regarding their degenerating values and their life styles which indeed has long term effects on the generation to come. The director was sensitive enough to take note of the finer details and to depict them so realistically. The movie highlights the result of the 'fun' enjoyed by the youth from well to do families which culminates in the increasing number of street children!!It offers many lesson's to the present generation and is a must watch.....

Nirvana.

‘’Hey Priyanka, today is a strike so no college I guess’’ sounded Dipali on the phone. I was already dressed and was waiting to go to the college. My mind just drifted away regarding the convictions behind these strikes. In the first place, why should we the public bear the brunt of someone’s action who is so insignificant in the society??why should we give a chance for someone so attention seeking like Muthalik to be in the limelight for all the wrong reasons? I just realized then that a person like Muthalik is just making his presence felt in occasions like this and publicizing his organization and himself. He in turn is using it as a publicizing tool! So its high time that we public got back into our senses and realized this fact! We need to follow the policy ‘’ignorance is bliss’’ to such personalities as him! This is because reacting to such people will only provide a platform for them to exhibit their nonsense and nothing more! moreover no government officials can take action and find a solution to it permanently! so its wise to just let them be!!!

Artbeat lessons.

‘’Priyanka Jayaraj is the coordinator of ART-BEAT 2010’’ announced Rose Veera Mam, the staff coordinator of the fest. One rush of chill just went down my spine… I just couldn’t believe that I was given such a big responsibility! We made different committees and began working. Initially we had a lot of difference in opinion and had to negotiate and reach conclusions. Then we had to change some of our working strategies for good! This proved to be effective as we had a good turnout of colleges. We racked our brains to come up with creative events with the theme Darbaar-e-kala and designed a good brochure as well! On the other hand, we walked in and out of all the organizations and establishments to get the necessary funds for the event and made the best use of all our contacts to reach our target budget. We also had a firsthand experience of a press conference for publicizing this event. This event was a big success for all the hard work we put in. ’’In the last ten years of artbeat, ARTBEAT 2010 has been the best’’ commented Alwyn D’Sa, Lecturer of English department, St Aloysius college. Moreover I have personally gained a lot with this event. I have learnt to manage different types of people with different temperaments, patience, perseverance, importance of maintaining good contacts and the value of good friendships. This indeed has helped me to grow as a person.
